Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game
The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had already known it was time for a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," explained a lead developer. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."
If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your allies on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move ideally crafted for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer says. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and inflict more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the elytra and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she hints.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport immediately.
Another major addition in this new update is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no requirement to come up for air for fresh air.
The rest of the additions are largely things that seek your demise, as is the tradition of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a zombie Nautilus spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you are able to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've long considered this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also bring in something for the ocean depths," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also points out that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Further inclusions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some highly requested changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford waterways while atop a horse. Also, high-tier barding is now available at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
In summary, the year-end release of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself — and the pandemonium it invites — would have constituted a major improvement. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
